A celebratory memorial is planned for Sunday, February 28
Afternoon event: We plan to gather on Sunday, February 28th at Long Marine Laboratory to celebrate Ron’s rich life. Long Marine Lab is located on the bluffs of Monterey Bay, where Ron lived, worked, and loved to spend time near the ocean.
Time: Sunday, February 28 at 2pm
Place: Seymour Marine Discovery Center at Long Marine Lab, 100 Shaffer Road, Santa Cruz
Directions: From Santa Cruz, take Highway One (Mission Street) north. Continue north through town several miles. Turn left on Swift Street. Turn right on Delaware Avenue. Follow Delaware to the UC Santa Cruz Marine Science Campus entrance at the end of the road. The Seymour Marine Discovery Center is the final building located on the ocean bluff, next to the giant blue whale skeleton. The event will take place in the La Feliz Room, to your left as you approach the main entrance of the building. Contact information for the Seymour Center is http://www2.ucsc.edu/seymourcenter/ or (831) 459-3800.
Details: This will be an informal gathering among friends and family, with the emphasis on Ron’s special contributions to each of us. Many of you were able to be at Ron’s Festschift in 2003 when we celebrated his incredible professional accomplishments. The nature of this event will be more personal. Light food and refreshments will be provided. Anyone who would like to send photos to share, please send them digitally. For those wishing to speak, please contact Ron’s daughter Nikki or his research partner Colleen. All communication to us can go to info@pinnipedlab.org.
If you plan on coming to the afternoon event at Long Marine Lab, please help us plan by clicking here and letting us know how many people to expect and whether you would like to join us in the evening for dinner (see details below).
Evening event: Ron liked nothing better than being with the people he loved, enjoying good music, good food, and of course, good company. Therefore, for those wishing to spend more quality time doing these things in his honor, we’ve arranged to have a no host dinner at Michaels on Main in Soquel, about a 10-15 drive from the marine lab. This was a place Ron loved and where we celebrated his 77th birthday in September. Michael’s has a bar, fireplaces, decks overlooking Soquel creek, and wonderful food, and this should provide a nice setting to gather together.
Time: We’ll be there after the event and by 7pm. Again, this is informal and those not wanting to stay for dinner can drop by the bar. For those wishing to stay for dinner, it is important that you let us know by following the RSVP instructions below.
Place: Michael’s on Main, at 2591 Main Street, Soquel, CA
Directions: Michael’s on Main is located in Soquel, very close to Highway 1. From Highway 1/Mission, take the Bay/Porter exit. Cross under the Highway (away from the ocean side) and then take an immediate right onto Main Street. Michael’s is on your left about a block down. Contact information for Michaels: michaelsonmain.net, 831-479-9777.
Details: Please remember this is a no host gathering.
